FAQ About Online Treatment for Sinus Infection

What is a sinus infection?

A sinus infection happens when the spaces behind your forehead, cheeks, and nose become swollen and filled with fluid. This can cause pressure, pain, thick drainage, and a feeling of fullness in your face. It often starts after a cold and can make it hard to breathe or feel like yourself.

What causes a sinus infection?

A sinus infection often starts after a cold. When your nasal passages swell, they can trap mucus inside your sinuses. Bacteria or viruses can then grow in that trapped fluid.

Allergies, smoke, or changes in the weather can also irritate your sinuses and raise your risk.

What are the symptoms of a sinus infection?
  • Facial pressure or pain (cheeks, eyes, forehead)
  • Thick yellow or green nasal drainage
  • Stuffy or blocked nose
  • Headache
  • Cough, often worse at night
  • Post-nasal drip (mucus down the back of your throat)
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Feeling tired
  • Low-grade fever
Is a sinus infection contagious?

A sinus infection is usually not contagious.

However, the cold or virus that often causes it can spread from person to person. Once the infection settles in your sinuses, you can’t pass it on, but good handwashing and covering coughs can help prevent the spread of the original virus.

What is a sinus infection treated with?
  • Rest and fluids to help your body heal
  • Saline nasal spray or rinse to clear mucus
  • Decongestants or pain relievers for pressure and headaches
  • Nasal steroid sprays to reduce swelling
  • Antibiotics, if a bacterial infection is confirmed
How long does a sinus infection last?

Most sinus infections last 7 to 10 days, especially if they start with a cold. Many begin to improve within a week. If symptoms last more than 10 days, get worse after you start feeling better, or continue for several weeks; it may be a bacterial infection. In that case, it’s a good idea to talk with a provider about the next steps.
